Pictograph Recording 1054 A.D. Supernova, Chaco Canyon, Chaco Culture NHP, New Mexico April 2006

The Chaco Anansazi studied the night sky. In 1054 A.D., a supernova occurred and was recorded by the pictograph of the sun on the cliff underhang with the moon and handprint pictograph. Another Anasazi pictograph of a spiral seen faintly beneath the underhang may also record the occasion. The desert varnish, the cliff swallows nests, and the ancient Anasazi records of significant events all add to the story told by this image.
