Immature Great Blue Heron, Morton Arboretum, Illinois August 2006

This is an immature Great Blue Heron as indicated by the lack of a full crest and neck plummage. I stalked this wily bird for about 45 minutes, but it continued to elude me by taking just a few steps to the next cover until it stopped and posed for this photograph. Morton Arboretum is the legacy estate of the Morton's of salt fame. An immense variety of flora and fauna nurtured here.
