Eilean Donan is one of the best known and preserved Scottish castles in the world. Originally built in the 11th century to protect western Scotland and the Hebrides from Viking raids, the castle changed hands several times amongst the northwestern clans before being destroyed by the British during another attempted Jacobite Rising.
