Edinburgh is built around the Edinburgh Castle which is sited at the top of the spine of a volcanic plug that descends at the Firth of Forth end. What remains of the oldest building (Medieval) in Edinburgh is in Old Town located east of the Castle. Building west of the Castle is called New Town, is Georgian style, and was built during the Scottish Enlightenment (18th century) to remedy overcrowding in Old Town.
