Merida has been occupied since perhistoric times. The current town, founded by Caesar Augustus, was originally named Emerita Augustus to be a home for discharged veterans of his army. Many Roman works remain including a forum, an amphitheater, a theater, a bridge, an aqueduct, a circus, and a patrician home with mosaic pavements.
