Cordoba is an important city in southern Spain. The first trace of human existence in the area is of the Neanderthals. The Carthaginians named it Kartuba. The Romans and the Visigoth both made it their capital at one time. During the Moorish reign, it was the capital of both the Emirate and then subsequently the Caliphate.
